"Light Switch" by John Timmons

The story headline is "Creating a Light Switch to Illuminate a Dark Room." The story description is "I very often get requests about how to turn the lights on in a dark room. Since, by default, we cannot see or interact with anything in a dark room, some device must be placed external to the dark room. This example demonstrates one way to turn on the lights in a dark room."

Release along with the source text and a website.

Use full-length room descriptions, American dialect, the serial comma, and no scoring.

[This is our starting room.]

The Foyer is a room. "A barren room except for a switch on the wall. There is an exit to the north."

[We create a device that is scenery (so it cannot be taken), switched off, and located in the Foyer. We put it in the Foyer room because we will be able to see it.]

The wall switch is a device in the Foyer. It is scenery. It is switched off.

[When switching on the wall switch, give the Kitchen room light, and carry out the action as usual.]

Carry out switching on the wall switch:

now the Kitchen is lit.

[This covers the opposite of the above command just in case the device is switched back off.]

Carry out switching off the wall switch:

now the Kitchen is dark.

[The Kitchen room which is dark to start. The room description will only be displayed after it has light.]

The Kitchen is north of the Foyer. The Kitchen is dark. "It seems like a normal kitchen now that the lights are on."

[A little message to be provided if the player tries to exit the room in directions that do not exist.]

Instead of going nowhere from the Kitchen when in darkness:

say "Stumbling around in the dark will get you nowhere."
