night forms seeing
the moon round
and slashed black
by cactus needles

I wrote notes
for wind, water, and sand
for her
by flashlight
above the desert

on a stone, I wrote
lit dim blue at the humming
focus and white
from the lamp
on its sand-worn skin

I felt a heart beating
deep deep and slow

the width and weight of oceans
heaving and heavy between the words
